The London Assembly holds the Mayor to account on decisions that directly impact our everyday lives, from tackling air pollution, to improving public transport and creating more green space. In fact, in 2019, members of the London Assembly successfully pushed the Mayor to bring his net zero target forward from 2050 to 2030.<\/p>

Our representative\u00a0will also have influence on the Mayor to push for a clean, green and fair future \u2013 locally\u00a0in Ealing and Hillingdon and at a London-wide level too.<\/p>

The Ealing and Hillingdon seat is currently held by Onkar Singh Sahota<\/b> from the Labour and Co-operative Party who is chair of the London Assembly Health Committee. He also sits on the Environment Committee so we hope that he will have no problem signing up to the FoE Climate Action Pledge. The Pledge urges decision-makers in London to show real climate leadership and is backed by an Action Plan setting out 10 priorities which FoE urges the next Mayor of London to implement.<\/p>

The other candidates for the Ealing and Hillingdon seat are: Marijn Cecile van de Geer<\/b> (Green Party); Gregory James Stafford<\/b> (Conservative Party), Hussain Shah Khan<\/b> (Liberal Democrats) and Anthony Michael Goodwin<\/b> (Reform UK).<\/p>

The FoE Climate Action Plan\u2019s 10 priorities for the next Mayor of London are:<\/p>

  1. Ensuring all infrastructure plans, programmes, and investment decisions \u2013 including plans to \u201cbuild back better\u201d\u2019 from COVID-19 \u2013 are in line with what\u2019s needed to address the climate and ecological emergency, including London\u2019s carbon budget and the carbon reduction pathway.<\/li>
  2. Ensuring those most impacted by climate breakdown and nature loss are heard and put centrestage in decision-making.<\/li>
  3. Protecting workers and communities through a just transition from a fossil fuel-dependent economy to a low-carbon, nature-rich, circular economy, including delivering the 79,616 jobs that a Local Government Association analysis says could be created in the region by 2030.<\/li>
  4. Introducing policies and measures that ensure new development is net zero carbon, and existing homes are brought up to high energy standards, thereby relegating fuel poverty to the history books.<\/li>
  5. Increasing public transport use, cycling and walking to at least 80% of journeys within the next 10 years, to cut climate emissions and ensure everyone can breathe clean air.<\/li>
  6. Powering the region with clean, renewable energy and reaping the economic and job opportunities it will bring, while ensuring fossil fuels are kept in the ground.<\/li>
  7. Greening the city region by increasing tree cover, protecting nature, and eliminating greenspace deprivation.<\/li>
  8. Becoming a zero-waste city region by 2030 without reliance on landfill or incineration to reduce pressures on nature from resource extraction and pollution.<\/li>
  9. Calling on the local government pension scheme to divest from fossil fuels, to stop profiting from environmental harm.<\/li>
  10. Opposing climate-wrecking and traffic-generating developments, including airport expansion at Heathrow and London City, and instead focus on cutting traffic levels.<\/li><\/ol>

    Each point in this plan includes a number of specific actions and the Ealing and Hillingdon FoE groups plan to contact the successful candidate in six months or a year\u2019s time to find out how much they have achieved under each section.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
