The gases trap heat by forming a blanket around the Earth \u2013 like the glass of a greenhouse. These gases stay in the atmosphere for many years. And as they build up, the planet\u2019s temperature rises.<\/p><p>A warmer world leads to a more extreme climate \u2013 with more severe droughts, floods and storms. And as the world warms up, feedback-loops can accelerate warming: melting polar ice means less of the sun\u2019s heat is reflected back into space.<\/p><p>Greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels \u2013 coal, oil and gas \u2013 and by cutting down forests. Without drastic action today, adapting in the future will be more difficult and costly.\u201d The UN set up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988 which brings together scientists from all over the world.\u00a0<\/li><li>Our doctors, through the <strong>BMA<\/strong> (British Medical Association), say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bma.org.uk\/collective-voice\/policy-and-research\/public-and-population-health\/climate-change\">climate change poses threats to public health.<\/a><\/li><li>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\">WWF<\/a><\/strong> (World Wide Fund for Nature ): \u201cClimate change is the greatest environmental challenge the world has ever faced\u201d.<\/li><li><strong>NASA<\/strong> (America\u2019s space agency, that put men on the Moon, landed rovers on Mars, and monitors Earth from space) <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\">explains the evidence, causes and effects of climate change<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p>B) <em><strong>Live more sustainably<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; Replace fossil fuels with renewable sources of energy (such as wind, solar and geothermal energy), halt deforestation, plant trees, adopt a more sustainable diet with less meat, drive less, limit the amount of time flying.<\/p><p>C) <em><strong>Support environmental organisations<\/strong><\/em> &#8211;
