Today, energy giant Drax, which operates the world's largest wood-burning power station near Selby in Yorkshire, announced its full-year financial results for 2021. We want to let you know what the true story is: that Drax profits from burning trees, and that rather than being a low carbon fuel of the future, burning biomass from forests harms wildlife, pollutes communities and emits massive amounts of carbon, making Drax the UK's largest CO2 polluter. Some years ago Friends of the Earth campaigned against motorways and road building in general. We said that using public transport was preferable to driving.

Governments did eventually listen and reduced their road building. However they’ve now managed to design a public transport system (HS2) that promises to be as destructive as any motorway. This was not what we meant by public transport.

The country does not need more connections to and from London. What we need is transport that is as attractive as using a car for all those local journeys which are made every day.
